optimize website speed

6 easy Steps to improve your website speed

1. Use a Content Delivery Network (CDN)

A content delivery network (CDN) consist of a number of geographically distributed servers. All servers work together to provide fast delivery of content to visitor. CDN distribute the cache copies of your website to all servers. When a visitor visits your website, he will get response from his nearest located server. Obviously it will not only increase the speed but also reduce resources utilization. Moreover, if you hosting server is down, even then visitor get your website loaded in his browser from CDN server. There are so many features of CDN. If your website is not connected with any CDN already, then get up and connect it to the best CDN named CouldFlare. CloudFlare provides a lot of services free of cost. Open CloudFlare, signup, register your domain and start using services.

2. Transfer your domain

Buy domain from one of the following best domain registrar as they provide fast website speed. If you have already a running domain, then transfer it
  • GoDeady
  • BlueHost
  • HostGator
  • Domain

3. Upgrade to dedicated hosting

Most people buy shared hosting at start up as it is cheaper. Shared hosting means that you are sharing resources like servers, bandwidth with other customers. If traffic on the websites of other customers is high then obviously you will get minimum resources and it will degrade your website speed.

To overcome this issue, don’t rely on cheap shared hosting. Just upgrade to dedicated hosting as it gives you dedicated resources on which you have full control. Dedicated hosting increases website loading speed amazingly.

4. Optimize Images

One of the major reason of website performance degradation is images. Google recommends images of size 100 KB. There are so many online image compression tools available using which you can reduce size of images in your website. One of the best image compression tool which I recommend is ShortPixil Image Opimizer. You can compress 50 images at a time upto 80 %. Images in JPEG, PNG or GIF formats can be optimized.

5. Minify HTML, Javascript and CSS files

Minifying Javascript and CSS is one of the easiest way to improve your page load speed. These files can have following flaws
  • White Spaces
  • Empty Lines
  • Unnecessary Code
  • Inefficient Code
  • Stripping Comments
  • Several Javascrips or CSS files
You have to identify and remove all redundant stuff and combine files into one. This action reduce the code and size of file. You can imagine that lessor the code a server/browser need to run through, the faster the website should load. You can do it manually or by using online minifier tool. You can minify all three types of files at one place by using Refresh-SF online tool.

6. Reduce HTTP Requests

Plain and simple HTML page with less number of HTTP requests loads fast as compared to HTML dynamic page with a number of HTTP requests. You can dramatically improve you website loading speed by reducing the number of HTTP requests. Lesser the number of HTTP requests means lesser the communication between client and server.

How to count number of HTTP requests of a website

You can easily find the number of HTTP requests with the help of Google Developers Tool. Load your website in Google Chrome and open Google Developers Tool by.
  • Right click at any place and click on Inspect Element OR
  • Press Ctrl + Shift + I
Select tab “Network” as in below image and reload the page. You will see the number of HTTP requests at left bottom corner. You can contact your developer to optimize it.
